glad midsommar!

During the winter at K.Olson, we celebrate Hygge, honoring the Lithuanian and Swedish traditions of my family. This includes time spent with loved ones sharing a Kūčios dinner, cozying up by the fire, hanging straw ornaments on the tree, savoring the aroma and sweet flavors of kisielus, and decorating pepparkakor cookies served up on a festive platter, just to name a few…

But during the summer, I think mostly of my Swedish grandfather and his lush, high-yeilding vegetable garden…one I’m trying to re-create in my own yard! I think of the most inviting aromas alerting all to mealtime, often featuring something fresh from his garden. I think of the bright happy colors of his home, the energy from the patterned textiles, and rosemaled works in each room.

In Scandinavian countries, midsummer is celebrated on the solstice, marking the midpoint of the harvest season. They celebrate with bonfires, games, food, and dancing. I decided to celebrate midsummer with you and fellow artist Carol Reed at my studio! We hosted a very special dinner, SAVOR catered by Local Dish, followed by two days of MARKET. I’m so grateful to all who came to celebrate midsummer with us!

In the spirit of sharing tradition and culture, I’d like to share my grandmother’s cold beet soup recipe with you.

enjoy! skanaus! avnjuta!
